In February, China confirmed the case of the first Covid-19 positive baby. The new Coronavirus, the cause of the current pandemic, can cause a picture similar to the common flu up to pneumonia with respiratory failure. In this article we report some data on the virus and the latest news on the first Covid-19 positive baby.

What is Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses of unknown origin. There are different types of Coronavirus and, as already mentioned, they can cause from a common flu to pneumonia or, in their most severe form, respiratory failure.

In December 2019, the first cases of a new Coronavirus were detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Since then , contagion from one infected person to another healthy person has drastically increased the number of cases.

Although the number of people who tested positive is very high today, mortality from this virus is currently low.

Breathing difficulty

What symptoms does it cause?

Sars-Cov-2 infection, this is the name of the new Coronavirus, in general causes symptoms similar to those of a common flu. Among them we can mention the following:

  • Runny nose.
  • General malaise.
  • Fatigue.
  • Muscular pain.
  • Cough.
  • Catarrh.
  • Fever and chills.
  • Sore throat and headache.

The infection can also present itself in an asymptomatic form, passing through the general symptoms that we have listed or, even, cause complications such as pneumonia or respiratory failure in the most serious cases.

The most severe cases usually occur in the most vulnerable individuals. These include the elderly, infants or people with depressed immune systems.

Covid-19 treatment and how to prevent it

There is currently no effective treatment for this virus. The symptoms will therefore be treated, or the medical intervention will be aimed at controlling fever, pain and keeping the patient in good general health.

It is also necessary to be alert in the event of the appearance of possible complications, especially among the risk categories. It is therefore important to avoid person-to-person contagion. For this purpose, adequate hygiene is determined, it will be sufficient to follow the basic rules, however paying particular attention to cleaning the hands.

It is advisable to avoid contact with people who are already infected and, if this cannot be avoided, to adequately cover eyes, nose and mouth.

The first Covid-19 positive newborn

In February, a medical staff confirmed the birth of the first child affected by Covid-19. Only after thirty hours of life, the newborn tested positive for Coronavirus.

Coronavirus protection

The baby’s mother had tested positive before delivery. It was therefore the first case of transmission of this new virus from mother to fetus in the uterus.

The baby was born in good general health and with an adequate weight. He had no fever, cough, mucus, or other general symptoms. Despite this, at some point he began to experience breathing difficulties. After 17 days in the hospital and under constant observation, the little boy recovered from the infection.

First newborn affected by Covid: to conclude

The latest type of Coronavirus discovered continues to maintain a low mortality despite having raised the alarm in all countries due to its high contagion capacity.

The birth of infected children demonstrates that transmission from the infected mother to the fetus is possible during pregnancy. This data obliges to increase the precautions towards pregnant women with the possibility of infection.

Babies who are just born and whose mothers tested positive for Coronavirus during pregnancy will also be more closely monitored.

In Italy there are several confirmed cases, but all under control and in a good general state of health. For the time being, there is no reason to resort to specific virus prevention measures in the case of pregnant women and their children.
