Mr Indifferent: a short film about the importance of helping others
Mr Indifferent is a very serious man who does not care about anyone and always minds his own business. In fact, in the first scenes of the short we can see that:
- Let the elevator doors close in a woman’s face.
- She is unperturbed when she sees how a girl’s balloon slips from her hands.
- She remains unmoved when she sees a man who loses control of the shopping cart.
- Ignore a woman who collects signatures for a good cause.
In all these situations, with a small gesture, Mr. Indifferent could have helped these people. However, he preferred to ignore it.
This all changes when he is about to cross the street at a pedestrian crossing and, surprisingly, an elderly woman grabs him by the arm to help him cross. In this situation, the man cannot say no and, at a very slow pace, decides to cross the street with the woman. But, suddenly, a car goes by at high speed and almost overwhelms them.
The change of Mr. Indifferent
After crossing the street, the woman thanks the man for helping her and pinches his face smiling. That’s when something clicks: all of a sudden, Mr. Indifferent’s world view changes totally.
In the following scenes, we can observe this change of attitude, in stark contrast to the previous situations:
- Mr. Indifferent prevents the elevator doors from closing in front of a woman’s face.
- Retrieve the balloon that escaped from the girl’s hands.
- He decides to stop at the booth of the woman who collects signatures for a good cause.
In addition, voluntarily, he decides to clean the beach of garbage, takes care of some children, donates blood and goes to keep company with the elderly in a retirement home. By performing all these actions, he realizes that his life is much happier.
One day, walking down the street, the protagonist of the story meets a serious and lonely man in front of the pedestrian crossing. He decides to put on some sunglasses and take a cane, pretending to be blind, and grabs the man by the arm, just like that old woman had done with him long ago. So, try to make them understand that helping others is beautiful and makes us happy.
Reflections and conclusions
This short shows us that it is never too late to start helping others. For example, it is never too late to enter the world of volunteering. But the ideal is to teach children from the earliest years of life to be in solidarity and to ensure that they grow up by internalizing certain civic and social values.
Encourage your children to take small steps to achieve this, such as donating toys and clothes to the most disadvantaged, supporting vulnerable children in the classroom, etc. Both them and you will feel comforted.
