Playa o montaña (“By the sea or in the mountains”) is the title of the beautiful spot created by the Mehuer Foundation, which tries to teach something about rare diseases and has managed to move the whole world. The organization has made a short film that has experienced a very rapid and widespread diffusion, leaving all the spectators who have been reached speechless.

And not wrongly, since it is a video that talks about love for children in adverse circumstances.  At the beginning, in fact, he portrays the most beautiful situation a couple can share: the expectation of a child. A real adventure in which emotions, fears and hopes are mixed.

What happens to that hope, though, if life throws you into a reality you never thought of? Are you prepared to face, together with your baby, one of the many rare diseases that exist? The value of this spot lies in highlighting the importance of knowing how to accept changes in direction in order to enjoy new horizons.

Playa o montaña : the spot on rare diseases

The starting point is the best news that any couple can receive: the arrival of a baby in their lives. Pregnancy draws smiles on their faces and spreads joy among loved ones, hence the desire to share it with everyone.

For this reason, the short film establishes an analogy between this expectation and the planning of an idyllic journey to the sea, which the couple has always dreamed of. During the wait, numerous emotions take hold of future parents: enthusiasm, joy, anxiety. Until the moment in which the countdown comes to an end, they take their bags and … off we go!

Having a child suffering from a rare disease means suddenly finding yourself in an unfamiliar and hostile land

However, their plans run into obstacles: the couple must change direction and take the first steps into even more hostile territory. “Welcome to the mountains”. A new destination, used as a metaphor for the termination of pregnancy and the beginning of a new life affected by a low prevalence pathology.

This reversal of reference points in life is summarized in the face of the new mother, uncertain between surprise, perplexity and fear.  With her baby in her arms, however, who takes her finger with her little hands, she recharges her energy to climb the mountain, avoid precipices and reach the top, facing adversity.

Rare diseases can affect anyone

In fact, just as shown in this video, having a son or daughter suffering from some rare disease is, at first, a severe blow to bear.  It is up to each of us, however, to make use of this change of destination to leave space and thus be able to appreciate beauty, joy and a sense of profound satisfaction.

Rare diseases: love in adversity

This video was created by the Spanish organization promoting the investigation of low prevalence diseases directed by Emilio Aragón. It aims to raise public awareness of rare diseases which affect 3 million people in Spain. The number of patients across Europe, on the other hand, reaches 30 million.

“You are not alone”, says an inscription that appears superimposed at the end of the commercial. And it’s true: it is estimated that more than 42 million residents in Central and South America are struggling for access to adequate diagnosis and treatment.

Without a doubt,  many parents face an unexpected turnaround in their lives when they have a child with one of these rare diseases and turn their lives into growing stories. And you, have you already watched this so refreshing video? What do you think of this initiative?
